A bit of green

The First Taste by Patrick Hammer, Jr. 2009

The winter light goes quick. Stars and moon cover up their face. Night trails its fingers in blank

blindness through the trees. Night offers nothing to the eye. No shadow even of what moved

earlier in each dark corner. The night fastens a long black caul to the lid of sky. But tonight

it casts a smell of early spring—a sign of what will come in the first taste of warm rain.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I have posted a poem from my friend Patrick who honors his Irish roots by his poetry and humor.
